Used For Health In Europe Since The Middle Ages! - Licorice is a tall and graceful plant with green leaflets and pale blue or violet pea-type flowers. An important health herb in ancient times and still used in many health preparations, it is equally valuable for confectionery and flavoring. Native to the Mediterranean, it is grown commercially throughout the temperate zones. - History - Licorice was mentioned on Assyrian tablets. Some was found in the funeral chamber of Tutankhamun. Roman legionnaires chewed it, as did Napoleon, we are told, to calm his nerves on the battlefield. It reached Europe in the fifteenth century. The Dominican friars at Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire, England made it popular with their famous Pontefract cakes and the licorice lozenges known as pomfrets. The name comes from the Greek glycys or 'sweet' and rhiza, 'root'. - Characteristics - Licorice is a hardy perennial with stoloniferous roots, downy stems, and pinnate leaves, with nine to 17 leaflet
